![]() (Personally, I can't see what difference there would be between an anvil with a mild steel body and one with a wrought iron body. I believe Brooks and Vaughan are still forged anvils, most other modern anvils are cast steel. Heated in furnaces and forge welded from several chunks of iron under big steam or air hammers with the steel face welded on last. In any case, consider the price a bargain.Wrought iron anvils are forged, not cast, no mold. Do they pull it out of the mold when it is still red hot? ![]() The steel is hammered on while the anvil is red hot. This of course would not have a top plate. If you were to just go to a foundry, give them the pattern for a 150 lb anvil and tell them you wanted it in ductile iron or something, they would probably quote you $500 to $750. If you can find some large wrought iron object you could potentially use it to make a new wrought iron casting, but I would not attempt such a thing without the assistance of an expert.Īny large casting is challenging. You will not normally be able to make an "old" anvil because they are made from wrought iron.
